Richmond, Virginia

We stopped near Richmond, Virginia at the Pocahontas State Park. It is a lovely park and we had the place almost completely to ourselves.

We then met up with Jill's nephew John, his wife Katy, and their wonderful kids, Jane and Cogan. John has just started a new job in Richmond and the family is in the process of moving there from Illinois. We were lucky to be able to meet up with them for dinner in "The Fan."

Raleigh, North Carolina

We left Georgia and headed north to Cary, North Carolina, home of Glenn's sister Carol and her husband Alexander. We parked the coach at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.

Carol and Alexander wanted their friends to have an opportunity to meet us and see our coach so they organized a party at the coach. They provided food, drink and friends. A good time was had by all!

At one point, there were 14 people in the coach, a new record!

Later that evening we headed downtown to eat at the Char-Grill. Carol and Alexander think they have the best burgers in Raleigh. We haven't had as many burgers in Raleigh as they have, but Char-Grill sets the bar pretty high.

Bix

We have a cat. We were not supposed to have a cat. There was supposed to be a moratorium on cats.

But back on January 7th, Jill went to the Hardee County Animal Refuge to visit the feral cat colony there again.

As Glenn puts it, Jill called from the park and said “Remember that cute cat we saw? Well he’s been hurt and I’m taking him to a vet.” At that moment Glenn knew we had a cat.

Three vet visits and hundreds of dollars later, we still have a cat. He is a striking animal and does have a sweet personality. But not all his habits are so pleasant. At first light (now about 6:00 AM) he wants to hunt. Toes are often a target.

He’s cutest when he’s asleep.

He’s named after Bix Beiderbecke, a jazz cornetist and composer who drank himself to death during prohibition. Glenn or Jill would often say “Poor Bix” whenever one of his recordings was heard on the radio. “Poor Bix” seemed to fit his personality when he first came to live with us. But not any more. Now he’s just “Bix.”

Kelly Jordan

Kelly Jordan was the developer and landlord of Jill and Glenn’s Ellis Cinema back in the ‘80s. We had offered him some of the Ellis memorabilia last July. He expressed a great interest in it so we brought him some more materials, including our poster collection.

Here are Kelly and Glenn in front of Kelly’s house in Candler Park, not far from the old cinema in Little Five Points.

The most recent reincarnation of the old Euclid Theater (the building’s original name) has been its most successful. For nearly 20 years it’s been The Variety Playhouse, a very popular live music venue featuring national music acts.

The K3

Glenn’s Elecraft K3 Transceiver kit arrived here in Cumming. It was a kit and had to be assembled. Here is Glenn putting it together on the dining room table.

Here is the assembled unit.

With no real antenna, he’s picked up stations across the USA and from Mexico and Argentina. Testing the transmitter will have to await getting a real antenna.
